Understand all the reasons why your concrete is failing

Concrete is a strong, long-lasting, and versatile material that has a number of uses, but it is not indestructible. Tucker Paving has been in the concrete industry for 30 years, and we have been called in to fix concrete failures of all kinds. There are a few reasons why concrete will fail, and we have seen them all.

Reasons for Concrete Failures

  1. Inadequate structural support. Concrete needs a strong base underneath it to last. If the base is not stable, then the concrete will eventually fail. Cracks and breakage can be signs of a base that is not stable. Base instability can stem from poor construction, water damage, and other problems.
  2. No protection from the elements. Concrete can withstand a lot of what Mother Nature can throw at it, but it’s not impenetrable. It’s important to keep your concrete sealed to protect it from the elements.
  3. Not repairing minor damage. Small cracks will become big cracks if they are not fixed in a timely manner. Similarly, you’ll want to also clean up spills from oil and other chemicals as soon as possible to minimize any long-term damage.
  4. Placing too much weight on the concrete. Concrete paving is installed for the typical traffic it will experience; for example, sidewalks are built to withstand pedestrians and bikes, and they would not hold up to the repeated weight of a vehicle. It can also matter what type of weight. For example, your driveway can handle the weight of your vehicle coming and going, but it might sustain damage from the 3,000 lbs of an immobile hot tub.

The best resource to diagnose—and fix!—your concrete’s problems is a professional concrete paver with experience and expertise.
