See the best practices we follow here at Tucker Paving on moving equipment on the roadway from one site to another.
A construction worksite has a lot of moving parts, both literally and figuratively. One area where a moving part presents a lot of challenges is moving equipment on the roadway from one work site to another, also called road running equipment. Tucker Paving has been in the construction industry for over 30 years, completing jobs in site clearing, demo, excavation and grading, underground utilities, concrete, and asphalt paving; many of those jobs require moving equipment on a roadway from one site to another. See the Best Practices we have our drivers follow—the right and wrong ways—when moving equipment on a roadway.
The Safe Way to Move Equipment
These are our Best Practices—the right way—to move equipment on a roadway:
- Only approved Equipment Operators are allowed to operate equipment. Approval for operation must come from the Superintendent level or above. Do not operate equipment you are not directed to operate by a supervisor.
- Always escort equipment with a vehicle with flashers on.
- Road running equipment should be only for short distances.
- Equipment other than a broom tractor (used to clear dirt and debris from a road) must have a flagger or spotter present and involved when the equipment is being operated on a roadway with public access.
- Contact the General Superintendent or Safety if you have any questions.
Don’t Dos in Moving Equipment
These are the things we advise our equipment operators not to do while operating equipment on a roadway:
- Do not road run equipment between sites without notifying General Superintendent or Safety.
- Do not operate equipment you are not directed to operate by a supervisor.
