The construction industry is booming, and it has been for some time. While analysts forecast a slowdown in the growth of the construction industry for 2020, it looks like those forecasts are predicting that the growth will be lower than in previous years, but still growth.
In some parts of the country, like the Sunshine State, construction growth is forecast to continue to grow faster than in other parts of the country. Explore the details on why it’s a good time to be in the market for a construction job in Florida.
Construction Jobs in Florida
There are a number of factors that show Florida to be a construction hotbed and a good option for employment in the construction industry. These factors include:
1. Florida is third in the country for construction growth. According to the Bureau of Labor, between August 2018 and August 2019, Florida added 20,900 jobs, an increase of 3.8%. Only Texas and California saw higher increases, and Florida had the greatest single increase in construction employment—4,100 jobs—between July and August of 2019.
2. Construction offers attractive wages. Construction wages in nearly every state are higher than the combined average wage of all other industries. Additionally, construction jobs offer immediate results in terms of pay and benefits without the high price tag of a college degree.
3. There’s a shortage of available workers in the construction industry, and there has been for some time. Analysts maintain the shortage is actually to blame in part for the forecasted slowdown of construction growth for 2020; construction companies can’t find enough employees to do the work. Those employees with a background in construction will have many options available to them in terms of employers and advancement in 2020.
4. Florida’s construction projects align with the biggest niche markets. Those niche markets in the construction industry that are still growing—such as “live-work-play” mixed-use developments—are popular in Florida due to baby boomers looking to move to a tropical climate.
