The time is now to make a plan to get your construction site ready for a hurricane.

It’s officially Atlantic Hurricane Season, and you don’t want to get caught unprepared. The time to prepare your construction site for a hurricane is now. In Tucker Paving’s 30 years in the construction industry in Central Florida, we’ve had some big storms come through. Make sure you and your crew are ready if a big storm comes through our corner of The Sunshine State again.

Steps to Preparing for a Hurricane

Hurricanes bring flooding, heavy rains, and high winds. It’s important to secure your construction site to mitigate any loss or liability. The very first thing any Florida construction company should do is to formulate a plan for those projects that will be under construction during the June 1st – November 30th hurricane season, plus or minus a month or so. The plan should designate who is responsible for preparing the construction site and surveying damage, who will contact any utility providers, when preparations will begin ahead of an impending storm, how employees will stay in touch, and any other important tasks.

All employees should be briefed on this plan so that everyone in the company is on the same page. Your company’s plan to secure their construction sites should look like this:

  1. Move loose materials, portable bathrooms, and expensive tools and equipment to a secure location if possible.
  2. Remove hazardous chemicals and store them somewhere safe to prevent them from leaching into the ground or water.
  3. Stack loose materials together and secure them with rope or duct tape.
  4. Use rope, sandbags, ground anchors, and other items to weigh down materials that are in danger of being blown away.
  5. Take down and store light-weight items like fence screens and signage.
  6. Secure any fuel that is needed to operate the site, such as for generators.
  7. Finish or secure any structures that are partially completed and not yet structurally sound concerning hurricane-force winds.
  8. Secure job site plans and other important documents, such as employee contact information, and store somewhere safe.
  9. Turn off power to the site.
