Tucker Paving subscribes to a “People First” safety culture, meaning that people and their safety come first before everything—before timelines, before ego, and before profits. In our 30 years in the construction industry, we’ve learned that it’s the best way to do it! We also encourage our employees to continue the “People First” safety culture beyond work. See ways that anyone can utilize “People First” safety ideals in their lives.

Putting People and Safety First

One area where we know for sure that people could do more “putting people and safety first” is on the road. Too often, drivers put something other than the safety of others first. Speeding, distracted driving, road rage, crashes, and drunk driving all happen when a driver puts something other than safety first.

At Tucker Paving, we encourage our employees to use a “People First” mindset in the following areas:

Speeding. Speed limits are posted for a reason, and that reason is safety. Speeding increases the chances of an accident occurring; the severity of such an accident increases as the speed of your vehicle increases. Your time to react and the ability of your vehicle to slow down both decrease as your speed increases, and you may not have enough time to react to your tire blowing, or to avoid the car merging into your lane, or to miss the child running into the road.

Respecting School Buses. School buses carry our most precious cargo! There are laws about when to stop for a school bus that are in place to protect the children who are riding and who are getting on and off the bus. Unless there is a physical barrier such as concrete curbing or a grass median between you and a stopped bus with lights flashing in the opposing lane, you must stop. School buses now have ticket writing cameras to catch drivers who pass school buses illegally.

People First on the Road. All too often, drivers on the road are not careful nor courteous. Following too closely, weaving in and out of traffic with sudden lane changes, not using a turn signal, and not following the “rules of the road” happen all too frequently. Stop all of those dangerous driving choices, use your turn signal, let vehicles merge, wave ‘thanks’ and see how much better your commute can be! Similarly, if you encounter someone driving slowly in the passing lane or committing other blunders, give them some grace. We never know what another person is going through!
