Caring About Safety

When it comes to safety, of course everyone cares about avoiding accidents, injuries, and worse for themselves. However, a true commitment to safety means caring about the safety of everyone else as well. When our actions reflect caring about the safety of our team members, contractors, clients, and anyone else on or around our job site, the focus on safety is magnified exponentially. Instead of each worker caring about the safety of one person, each worker cares about all the other workers, all the contractors, clients, etc. In this way, the focus on safety increases and accidents, near-misses, and worse lessen. 

What does caring about safety look like? This is what we tell our Tucker Paving crews when we talk about “safety is about caring”:

  1. We care enough to follow procedures because it can help us all go home safe. 
  2. We care enough to watch out for our teammates. 
  3. We care enough to make sure each team member understands his or her role. 
  4. We care enough to give authority to each and every team member to stop work when something is unsafe. 
  5. We care enough to review things that happen and make provisions for improvements. 
  6. We care enough to start our meetings with prayer. 
  7. We care enough to constantly strive to improve ourselves and accept responsibility for our own safety.
