When a Florida thunderstorm passes through, it can leave downed power lines in its wake that present a real and present danger to anyone who goes near. Whether you’re working on a construction site, or just being out and about after a storm, it’s important to treat downed power lines with the respect they require. Tucker Paving has been in the construction industry for 30 years, and safety is always the first priority on our jobsites. See the tips we share with our employees to stay safe around downed power lines.
Safety Around Downed Power Lines
A downed powerline is a very real possibility while living in the Sunshine State. Here are a few tips when you find yourself near a downed powerline.
- Stay at least 35 feet away from any downed power line, and don’t go near the pole or anything touching the line. Call 911 immediately if a power line is down.
- Never approach a downed wire yourself. Always call your local authorities in an emergency.
- Consider all wires energized and dangerous. Even de-energized lines may become energized at any time.
- Electricity can travel through the ground, fences, hoses, and playscapes. A live wire, either on the ground or in trees, can harm you, even if you don’t directly touch the line.
- Electricity can also travel through tree limbs. Never remove tree limbs or other items touching or near a downed wire.
- Never use any object to move a downed wire.
- Rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes will not protect you from electrocution.
- Do not try to rescue someone who makes contact with a downed power line. You risk becoming a victim yourself. Call 9-1-1.
