June is National Safety Month, and it’s the perfect time for us to share the daily steps we take at Tucker Paving to prioritize safety. Tucker Paving has been in the construction industry—specifically asphalt and concrete paving, Earthworks, and underground utilities—for over 30 years in Central Florida, and safety is always our first priority on every jobsite.
How can you tell? The insurance industry uses a metric called the Experience Modification Rating (EMR or E-Mod) to determine insurance rates; an EMR of 1.0 is the industry average, and anything lower indicates a better-than-average safety record. Tucker Paving’s EMR is currently .62!

Ways We Prioritize Safety
- Setting Expectations. A focus on safety can’t be something that your company talks about; it must be something that you DO every day. At Tucker Paving, we have the expectation that everyone, from the company President to the new team member, shares the responsibility of achieving the highest level of safety performance. Everyone is responsible for safety, and safety rules and guidelines are to be followed by everyone.
- Formal Training. All of our employees go through required OSHA trainings and then beyond. We don’t stop at the minimum requirement. Along with taking OSHA’s OSHA 10-Hour Construction training and the OSHA 30-Hour Construction course, our employees undergo training on Trench Safety, Confined Space, Excavation Awareness, Silicosis Awareness, Forklift Certification, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) safety training, CPR/First Aid, and more; we also provide training in Spanish if needed. Trainings are reinforced with pre-start toolbox talks.
- Safety Policies. Tucker Paving has codified safety policies for our employees for the most common safety hazards, such the 50-foot rule when working around heavy machinery, substance abuse testing, and rules for working around existing utilities.
- Daily Inspections. Everyone has a daily checklist of items to go over to ensure that tools, equipment, machinery, and Personal Protective Equipment are safe and in good working order.
- Our Winning Way. Tucker Paving has established a series of principles that guide all that we do. These include Staying Safe—of course!—but also People First, Own It, Better Every Day, and Accountability & Integrity. All of these credos align with creating a safe workplace.
- Safety Rewards. Staying whole and healthy is a reward in and of itself, but we like to go a step further! At Tucker Paving, an employee’s safety track record is both recognized and rewarded with prizes and money!
