Road construction is a necessity that must be contended with; the only question is when! Tucker Paving has worked in the construction and paving industries for over 30 years, and we can tell you that both nighttime and daytime paving have their advantages and disadvantages. No matter which one is chosen, the safety of both workers and drivers is always our leading concern.

Pros and Cons of Nighttime and Daytime Paving

There are advantages and disadvantages of paving in either the night or the day; sometimes it’s a moot consideration as both daytime and nighttime paving crews will be needed to complete a paving job in a timely manner!

For daytime paving, the advantages are many:

  • The natural sunlight of daytime is one of the strongest advantages of daytime paving; it’s just easier to see everything! It’s also easier for drivers to see while driving through a construction zone.
  • Daytime traffic is generally more consistent and disciplined as most people are on their way to work.
  • During the cooler months, the weather is more desirable during daytime paving.

Disadvantages of daytime paving are numerous as well:

  • There is a higher amount of traffic. More cars on the road means more chances for accidents to happen.
  • In Florida during the summer months, daytime paving is much more difficult due to the hot temperatures, humid air, intense sunshine, and afternoon thunderstorms.

For nighttime paving, the advantages include:

  • In the summer months, it’s much more comfortable for workers due to lower temperatures, less rain, and no sun.
  • The lighter traffic during the night hours means a safer work zone.

Disadvantages of nighttime paving can also be numerous. They include:

  • It’s obviously harder to see at night, for both workers and drivers, making a nighttime construction zone more dangerous. Lighting must be brought in to allow workers to see what they are doing, and lights will need to be added to allow drivers to see the construction zone, workers, construction vehicles and equipment, and any closed lanes well in advance.
  • While nighttime traffic is lighter, it is much more likely that there will be intoxicated drivers on the road during the night.
  • During colder months, nighttime temperatures can get quite low, making it harder for workers to do their jobs.

No matter whether paving is occurring at night or during the day, the most important factor is keeping workers and drivers safe.
