Texting can be a necessary form of communication on any job site; like anything, make sure you’re doing it safely.
Research has shown that when we try to text and multitask, our ability to perform those tasks well and safely is diminished. Essentially, trying to text and drive, walk, or work means that our driving, walking, or work suffers. Since texting is a common means of communication on job sites, it’s important to ensure that workers are texting in the safest manner possible. Texting wasn’t around when Tucker Paving stepped into the paving industry 30 years ago, but since safety is our priority on every job site, we’ve developed recommendations for texting that are part of our successful safety management program.
Rules for Safe Texting
These are the safety recommendations we share with our employees to ensure that texting does not lead to injuries or even worse while on Tucker Paving job sites:
- Never text and drive. It’s never worth it because the damage that can occur is not worth the reward. There is no message that is worth causing an accident that will damages property at best and cause injury or death at worst.
- Stand still while on the phone—texting or talking—when you are in or near a work zone. Your mind will not be able to catch all of the hazards present if you are walking while texting or talking on the phone.
- Stay away from roadways and areas that heavy equipment travel. It’s very easy to become distracted while texting or talking and step into traffic.
- When operating equipment, do whatever is necessary to make the equipment safe before picking up your phone to call or text. This could include stopping, setting the brake, or putting the bucket or blade down.
