See the safety guidelines that should be followed when working with or near excavators.

An excavator is a common site on Tucker Paving worksites; it’s almost as common a sight as multiple excavators on our worksites! We offer Underground Utilities and Earthworks, including site clearing, excavation, and demolition, so excavators play a huge role in our day-to-day operations. They are large, powerful machines where the cab, boom, and arm can rotate 360 degrees; excavators can be very dangerous because they have a wide reach and the pack quite a wallop. At Tucker Paving, safety is our first priority on every job site, so we created safety guidelines for working with or near excavators.

Safety Guidelines For Work Concerning Excavators

These are the guidelines that we require everyone on a worksite with excavators:

  1. Always give excavators plenty of space, no matter whether you are driving equipment or trucks, or if you are walking into an area where an excavator is working.
  2. Always stay outside the swing radius of the excavator until the operator sees you and understands your intentions.
  3. Never walk under an excavator’s bucket.
  4. Excavator operators should not allow anyone under the machine’s bucket.
  5. Operators should always make predictable movements and avoid being abrupt or unpredictable with their actions.
  6. Always use a designated spotter anytime you operate a track-hoe within 15 feet of overhead obstructions, especially power lines.
  7. Tasks, like sawing pipe, should be done away from the swing radius of the machine when possible.
